Project Description

Completion: 2013

Sexton’s Cottage is a historic building within the grounds of St Thomas Rest Park on Sydney’s North Shore. The 1850s Heritage building now houses the burial register, storyboards depicting the site’s history and other information on the social history of the area. The cemetery features the graves of early pioneers.

Remedial Building Solutions were contracted by Dr Ian Hoskins, Historian of North Sydney Council to advise and rectify the existing rising damp concerns to the premises along with a persistent water leak. A suitable damp course was inserted accordingly, plastering rectification in accordance with Heritage guidelines and external rectification completed in a timely manner and with minimal disruptions.

Client’s comments:

“In October 2013 Hugo De Jesus and Remedial Building Solutions assisted North Sydney Council with the rectification of a long term rising and descending damp problem at Sextons Cottage Museum. The building is a 19th century structure of local heritage significance. The problem of the rising damp was vexing because the structure sits low to the ground with little below floor ventilation. Remedial Building Solutions were able to detect the source of the problem, recommend a suitable solution and finish the job (i.e. replastering with lime based material) in a manner appropriate to the heritage standing of the building. Some nine months after the work was completed, and following a period of very wet weather, there is no indication that the damp has returned.”
